High Expectations

Posted on May 11, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Hi guys! Isabella here. :{)
So as I said in a  previous blog entry, I've been studying for the CLEP College Composition exam. I'm practicing writing essays, for the essay portion of the test, so I thought I'd post one of the essays I've written and you can let me now what you think. :)

The topic is; "Is it better to have high expectations or low expectations?"

It's far better to have high expectations than low, because high expectations give people something to strive for, and a reason to be the best. While low expectations make it okay to be barely skimming across the bottom.  Say you were a parent with low expectations for your children, it's almost like telling them it's okay to fail. On the other hand, having high expectations for your child is incentive to do something, because children only want to make their parents proud. Its hard for a child to rise above what the parent taught them, since it's what they went by, growing up. Thus they may never strive to do anyhting important or worth while in their lives, if it is not encouraged by a parent they look up to.

A study was done to prove that the level of expectations you set for someone is what they live up to. A classroom full of students was divided by eye color, the brown eyed students were told they were the slow group and  the students with blue eyes were told they were the advanced group. All of the students had to take a test and since the brown eyed students knew that little was expected of them, they did poorly on the test, while the other students with high expectations did better. They lived up to what level of expectations were set for them.

Even businesses are trying to set high expectations for thier customers. Businesses don't want their customers to be expecting terrible results with their product, that's why hair care product brand; "John Frieda"'s slogan; "Expect Perfection" is effective. It may sell more, because its telling the consumer, that with the product, they'll get perfect results.

When starting a business, its better to have high expectations than low. A low expectation sets your business up for failure, which is not a good way to run a business. You couldn't profit anything out of the business if you don't have faith that it can actually go somewhere. Not believing something big could happen to your business will cause you not to work on it.

There are some people who could argue that to have low expectations is better than to have high expectations. That way, If your child comes home with a 'C' on his/her report card, you won't be disappointed.  But this way of thinking would get you average results, at best. So shoot for the moon, if you miss, at least you'll land among the stars.

                      Peace, Love and Sparkles,
                                                               Belle :{)
